Methods of Damp Proofing

Membrane Damp Proofing: In this method, a damp proof course or a water resistance membrane is put between the part of the damp building and the source of dampness. DPC may comprise of materials including bitumen, bituminous felts, mastic asphalt, cement concrete, metal sheets, and plastic sheets. The DPC might be placed or introduced vertically or horizontally in walls, floors, etc. DPC provided basement is known as Tanking.
Internal Damp Proofing: In internal damp proofing, waterproofing compounds are mixed with the concrete to make it impermeable. The waterproofing compounds that are used for damp proofing are the compounds made from talc, chalk, and fullers earth that can fill up the gaps of concrete. Compounds such as aluminum sulphate, alkaline silicates, and calcium chlorides react chemically with concrete for producing water-proof concrete.
Compounds such as petroleum, soap, oils, and compounds including stearates of sodium, calcium, ammonia, etc work on the principle of water repulsion. When it is mixed, the concrete becomes resistant to water.
Surface Treatment: In an internal finish, dampness goes through the material pores that are used in finishing. For preventing the entry of moisture into these pores, the pores should be filled up. For restricting moisture to enter, a layer of water repellent compounds or substances is applied to places through which moisture can enter.
Cavity Wall Construction: Cavity wall construction is used for damp prevention. The main wall is protected by an outer walls so that there is a cavity between the two. This cavity creates a gap and this way moisture cannot travel from on outer wall to the inner wall.
